Demystifying

A lot of misconception has been attributed to tantra yoga, one of the most common one is that it involves sex in some way. I suppose the sexual aspect could be somehow related during the meditative parts of it. However, sex is such a far away topic with tantra yoga itself. Tantra yoga is a wholesome approach to the study of the universe starting from the study of individuals. In simpler terms, it is the study of one small part, which is yourself, to learn about the world. This often is a too general description of its principles but it this is what it really is.

Spiritually

Tantra yoga practice focus on the spiritual aspects of yoga more than anything else. During the start of meditation, yoga practitioners are often told to focus on their Shakti. Shakti is the energy inside the body. Tantra yoga practitioners, also known as yogis, bring Shakti up through the chakras gathered in the forehead. After collecting all the chakras in the forehead, yogis are directed to imagine or visualize that the Shakti is being poured out from the forehead to combine before them. From this, the visualization will continue in an attempt to enlarge this mass of energy to the mass and size of a person. The created person may be a representation of one's self or a depiction of a deity.

Perhaps the sexual connotation attributed to Tantra yoga comes from the devotion and love needed in order to focus on visualizing the Shakti. Devotion and love is needed during the visualization of spiritual energy during the meditive exercise. In a sense, Tantra yoga can be considered as self-love or devotion to God. This depends on how the yogi chose to take the Tantra yoga.

The Goals of Tantra Yoga

The main goal of Tantra yoga is to expand awareness in all the possible state of consciousness. Whether waking, dreaming or sleeping the yogi must have awareness. In order to do this, yogis are instructed in ways to program their mind to view life in a healthier manner. Tantra yoga teaches its practitioners to identify factors that may influence the way they think. This is for the reason of changing these factors if necessary to rise above the obstacles that may hinder them from attaining their main goal. By changing habits and thought processes yogis can learn to nurture feelings of peace, order and contentment within their self. This abolishes the inclination to self- destruction with the thought based upon selfishness, ignorance and intolerance.

Tantra yoga offers complete tools to aide those who want to try or begin the practice. It may aid you in directing your thoughts to healthier processes. This is may be done by guiding one towards breathing exercises, spiritual and physical cleansing of self. It also includes visualization, mantra repetitions or chanting. These exercises can help achieve divine nature as taught by yoga instructors in the Tantra yoga branch of yoga practices.
