The Wedding Ceremony Is Most Couples' Primary Focus, But The Rehearsal Supper Can Be Special, Too
There are countless plans, expenses and stresses that go hand in hand with planning a wedding. If couples aren't careful they can get so involved with planning the event and attempting to get all the details right that there is little time to enjoy the experience. When my niece was planning her wedding she had three bridal showers to be at, reception plans to finalize and was attempting to find a venue for the rehearsal dinner. The third shower was located at my home. I'm her godmother so I had wanted to make it really special for her. Several days before the wedding shower we talked on the telephone. She sounded very anxious. She and her fiance were also having problems selecting the best wedding songs for the wedding ceremony. I recommended that she arrive the night before the wedding shower and stay overnight and we would chill out and I would help her organize a list of what still had to be done prior to the wedding ceremony. She thought this sounded like a great plan.
I did most of of the preparations for the wedding shower prior to my niece getting there so that we could concentrate on her requirements. She shared that the rehearsal dinner was her main stress because the place they had reserved had double booked, so they needed to locate a new location. We began by working on finding the best wedding songs for the wedding day so we could get one stress out of the way thereby giving reassurance that the other would be dealt with as well. As I predicted finding the best wedding songs was just a matter of searching the internet, listening to samples, ordering and that was that. Now to settle the rehearsal dinner.
The rehearsal supper is historically done by the groom's family; as a matter of fact a number of individuals refer to the occasion as the groom's dinner. My niece's fiance is from out of state so his family is is paying for the rehearsal dinner, but they're not able to assist with making the plans. My niece had contacted the restaurant where the wedding reception will be at, but the only space available was the section where the wedding reception would be held. My niece said that the plan was to decorate the reception area prior to going to the church for the rehearsal.
We called two nearby restaurants to see if they could host the rehearsal dinner. Both had other events booked. Her fiance's parents are divorced, also both have married again. This meant that there were extra people to incorporate in the rehearsal dinner. This was also adding to her tension because she was attempting to suss out the etiquette for seating. She had the seating chart arranged for the wedding day, but not knowing where the rehearsal dinner would be happening limited her capability to prepare a chart.
I asked my niece if she had called the church to look into if the fellowship area would be open. Everyone could just socialize and have a light catered meal. This would be much less formal and would be easy to plan. The fellowship area was available that day. We called two delis and ordered a buffet meal. My niece called her fiance and told him the new plans for the rehearsal dinner. He thought this sounded great. He would make preparations to have a friend of his tend bar and would organize for the drinks.
The rehearsal dinner was a nice relaxed evening. The guests were able to mingle and socialize and the bride and groom did not feel the need to sit in one spot while everybody ordered their food and had it served. With having a buffet line the atmosphere was very casual and the out of town guests didn't have to try to find another location in an area that they weren't familiar with.
