A Young Woman Triumphs Over Her Depression, Gets Alcohol Therapy For Her Excessive And Irresponsible Drinking, And Bolsters Her Self Image

Emily was a forty-four-year-old photographer who was fed up with feeling depressed everyday and fed up with her abusive drinking behavior. Simply put, she was sick of feeling tired every morning, she was angry with herself for spending her hard-earned money on a valueless habit, she was tired of going through failed relationship after failed relationship because of her irresponsible drinking, she missed her old drive for doing various things she enjoyed, and she hated the hangovers she went through on a regular basis.

On top of the observable alcohol-related health problems she was experiencing, perhaps the most troublesome part of her drinking routine was the unreliable and dishonest person she had turned into. In her heart she knew that she had been dishonest about her drinking behavior to her friends, family, and relatives and she also knew she had been lying to herself about the "positive" effects of drinking. Not only this but she rationalized gulping two or three alcoholic beverages before going to social events and she also made excuses for needing a few drinks as soon as she awakened so that she could cope with the "pressures" at work. Simply put, Emily got to a pivotal time in her life when she realized that she hit a low point in life and was now ready to begin the slow climb back to health.

One of the ways that Emily put her "plan" into action was by requesting a transfer at her place of employment. When her request was granted, she moved 750 miles away to a new city. If nothing else, this absolutely made making new friends and dissociating herself from her old friends easier. Then she went to see a healthcare practitioner in her new town and scheduled an appointment for a comprehensive exam.

After meeting with the doctor and going through a number of lab tests, it was determined that Emily had made the unfortunate change from alcohol abuse to alcoholism and consequently, really needed alcohol detox and alcohol treatment. At this difficult time, the physician made it a point to go over the various alcoholic symptoms and the general symptoms of alcoholism. In addition to spending a lot of time focusing on Emily's alcoholism symptoms, the healthcare professional also told Emily that it was determined that she was clinically depressed and in need of treatment for this medical condition.

Due to her willingness to follow through with the treatment protocol, after nine weeks of inpatient rehabilitation, Emily was ready to start rehab on an outpatient basis. At this point, she started working at her new job and over the weeks began fortifying her body by taking vitamins, living an alcohol-free way of life, drinking filtered water, working out, and eating healthy foods.

After roughly ten weeks of outpatient rehabilitation during which time she never experienced an alcohol relapse, Emily stopped going to alcohol treatment and instead started going three times every week to local AA meetings. Going to these meetings helped Emily maintain her alcohol-free style of life, they provided her with the support she needed, and they served as a constant reminder of the negative consequences that are related to excessive and unhealthy drinking. Compared with her life just a few short months ago, life was now pleasant and loaded with potential that she could have never hoped for or realized while she was involved in abusive drinking behavior.
