A Health Teacher Teaches Her Students About The Critical Nature Of Alcohol Addiction Signs

Miss Jackson was a health teacher at the most under financed parochial high school in the district. Even though she had been teaching for only three of four years, she had already acquired a reputation as an educator with teaching techniques that encouraged and stimulated her students to learn and to think.

For example, one Friday morning at 10:00 she addressed the pupils in her classroom and announced the following: "For the next week we are going to learn about some commonplace alcoholism signs from a more broad-based point of view and we are also going to learn about some of the most familiar signs of alcoholism from a less general and more detailed point of view."

"Not every one of these alcoholism warning signs will undeniably reveal that someone with a drinking problem is an alcohol dependent individual, but the more signs that an individual manifests, the stronger the probability that she or he is an individual who is alcohol dependent."

Miss Jackson then informed the members in the class that each pupil would be accountable for examining three alcohol addiction signs and then presenting his or her findings to the other class members via a thirty minute oral presentation.

The day after all of the pupils completed their presentations, Miss Jackson passed out a piece of paper with a list of all the alcohol addiction signs that were presented and discussed in class and in the presentations. Miss Jackson then asked the pupils in her class to study the list and rank the top eight alcohol addiction signs that were most indicative of alcohol dependency. After about twenty minutes, Miss Jackson collected the pieces of paper and informed her pupils that after she assesses the results, she will discuss her findings the next school day.

Miss Jackson asked the pupils in her class to go over the data on the piece of paper she passed out and then to raise their hand if they had any issues, questions, or concerns. Within 20 or 30 seconds, virtually everyone in the classroom raised his or her hand. It was noticeable that the pupils had some issues, concerns, or questions about their results versus the answers given by the alcoholism professionals. As an illustration, virtually every person in the classroom disagreed with the highest ranking answer given by the alcoholism professionals, that is to say, "Do you feel unusually sick when you refrain from drinking?"

Miss Jackson then explained to the students in her classroom why this answer was the most precise indicator of alcoholism. She highlighted the fact that the main difference between alcohol dependency and alcohol abuse is the physical dependency that is experienced with alcohol dependency and not with alcohol abuse.

In essence this means that when an alcohol dependent individual abruptly stops drinking, he or she will go through alcohol withdrawal symptoms. After Miss Jackson explained the significance of alcohol withdrawals in the life of the alcoholic, the pupils started to comprehend the main difference between alcohol abuse and alcohol addiction.

A few minutes later the bell rang, indicating the end of the class. Based on the enthusiasm displayed by the students when they were leaving the room, Miss Jackson realized that she had inspired and stimulated the pupils in her class to stop and think about an essential health issue and social problem that exists in our society.
